徐冠宇 Guanyu Xu: Resident Alien
徐冠宇 Guanyu Xu is an artist, born in Beijing, and currently based in Chicago. His proposed new film-based project, Resident Alien, examines the precarious state of being a legal subject in the U.S. but perpetually treated as an alien. Through positioning and layering images of collaborators’ personal belongings, interior spaces, pictures they have from home, and photographs of places they captured in this world, the final photographs will eventually blur the boundary between the familiar and foreignness, private and public, belongingness and alienation.
Resident Alien will present the complex condition immigrants are experiencing in the U.S. For immigrants, home is never private and secure, but a perpetually temporary state. The project will examine the complicated notion of the legal body and how we define an alien. Who has the privilege and power to decide the legality of a person?
