Phoebe Shuman-Goodier
Phoebe Shuman-Goodier is an interdisciplinary artist rooted in Rhode Island. She holds a BFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design and is currently pursuing her MFA in studio art at the University of Texas at Austin. The ongoing series Bad Dogs centers around her visits to her childhood home-turned-junkyard over the past decade. The work reveals a complicated dynamic between a father and daughter functioning within the the impact of hoarding disorder and unpacks their family history as it is reflected in the accumulations on the property. Phoebe’s practice is a cathartic tool that she uses to navigate life. She believes in the power of collaborative artmaking to demonstrate alternatives and create new paths that challenge the status quo. This can range from how one responds to mental illness and repairs relationships to employing tools of transformation in situations that seem out of one’s control. Phoebe intends to use this film grant to continue this heart project with her dad. Her ultimate goal is to create a book and exhibition of Bad Dogs.
